“No purchase necessary” means an eligible person must have a way to enter the sweepstakes without buying a coin package. It does not mean every account qualifies, promotional coins are immediately redeemable, a prize is guaranteed, or the free-entry process has no instructions. The operator’s current rules still control age, location, account, entry and redemption requirements.
Sources checked October 3, 2026. This is a research-based explanation, not legal advice or evidence of submitting an entry or redeeming a prize.
Why the phrase matters
The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance says a company cannot require payment to enter a sweepstakes or claim that buying something improves the odds of winning. That is the core idea behind “no purchase necessary.”
At a sweepstakes-style social casino, a purchase and a sweepstakes entry are therefore different things. Operators may sell entertainment-only coins and provide promotional currency through free routes, through marked promotions, or as a bonus attached to an entertainment-coin purchase. Our Sweeps Coins guide explains why the two coin types should be tracked separately.
The phrase is not a promise that using a paid route creates better game results. For example, Stake.us’s current terms state that no purchase is necessary and that a payment will not increase a customer’s chances of winning. Chumba’s current rules carry the same no-purchase message.
What a free entry route can require
A free method of entry can still have detailed instructions. Depending on the operator, it may require an eligible account, an exact handwritten statement, a unique code, a particular card size, a photo or identity check, or submission from the same jurisdiction as the verified address. Missing one requirement may invalidate the request.
That is why “free” should be read as no purchase price for the entry, not “no steps.” Postal methods may still involve ordinary postage and supplies. Online methods may require a compatible device, camera permission and identity checks.
Current example: Chumba’s online request
Chumba Casino Sweeps Rules version 23.0, updated March 18, 2026, describe four possible ways eligible participants can collect Sweeps Coins. These include a daily bonus, no-cost social giveaways, bonuses attached to specifically marked Gold Coin purchases and an online request method.
For the online route, the rules require the participant to sign in, complete an entry acknowledgment, copy unique wording by hand onto a blank 4-by-6-inch card or paper, photograph it and complete the stated security checks. The rules say a valid request receives five Sweeps Coins. They also prohibit automation, altered images and requests made by someone other than the eligible participant.
This is a useful reminder not to follow an old blog post or saved template. Entry wording, technology and submission methods can change. Open the operator’s current rules and request screen each time.
Current example: Stake.us postcards
Stake.us’s current terms list daily bonuses, promotional giveaways and handwritten postcards as free ways to receive Stake Cash. The postcard section says a compliant request receives five Stake Cash.
The Stake.us method currently requires a unique postcard code, specified account details and an exact statement. It limits each outer envelope to one request card, requires legible handwriting and says the customer must personally prepare the entry. The terms also say it must be mailed from the same state or province as the verified residential address and may be rejected from excluded territories.
Chumba’s current example is online; Stake.us currently uses post. The shared lesson is not that one template works everywhere. Each operator defines its own route, and those instructions need to be followed exactly.
What no purchase necessary does not guarantee
- Eligibility: Age, residence, excluded-territory and account requirements still apply. Check the operator’s live rules and our state availability resource.
- Instant credit: A request may need validation, and incomplete or misdirected submissions can be rejected.
- Immediate redemption: Promotional currency may need to be played as specified, and minimums and verification can apply. See our redemption guide.
- A prize: Free entry provides participation under the rules, not a guaranteed winning result.
- Permission to automate: Both examples above prohibit automated or third-party entry activity.
A practical check before you submit
- Use the operator’s official rules, not a copied social post or third-party template.
- Confirm that your age, location and account meet the current eligibility section.
- Check whether the route is online or postal and obtain any code from the official account area.
- Copy every required detail exactly and keep a personal record of what you submitted.
- Recheck the rules before a later request, because the process can change.
If someone unexpectedly claims you won and demands a fee to release the prize, do not confuse that with a legitimate entry or redemption process. The FTC warns that real sweepstakes do not require payment to claim a prize.
